20ALIENZ
The journey of my 23-year-old autistic stepson to becoming an IP creator and video game maker.
Five years ago, I sat across from my wife with an idea that felt equal parts crazy and obvious.
Our son Noah — 23, autistic, fiercely creative, and completely done with the path traditional education had laid out for him — had just graduated high school. Communication doesn't come easily for him. College wasn't the fit. But I'd watched him light up making YouTube videos and losing himself in video games for years. He had skills in Adobe Premiere. He had something to say. He just needed a different door.
So I proposed this: What if I taught him how to draw? How to shade? How to build in Blender, UEFN, and Verse?
We had no idea if it would work. But in the words of the great Michael Scott (**cough** Wayne Gretzky), "You miss 100% of the shots you never take!"
When we put it to Noah, he was geeked.
And so we started.
He drew alien after alien -20 of them - sketching and re-sketching until every one was exactly right. He built them from scratch as voxel 2.5D characters in Blender. He learned the UEFN toolset through community tutorials, hours of trial and error, and more patience than most people have in a lifetime. I told him at the start: " This is going to be the most frustrating and rewarding thing you've ever done." He didn't flinch.
To the UEFN community - the creators who made tutorials, answered questions, and built resources freely for anyone willing to learn: you changed Noah's life! That is not an exaggeration. Thank you!
Now here's where the story gets a twist.
While I was at Epic Games, Noah couldn't participate in Engagement Payout. Then, on that beautiful Tuesday in March 2026, I got laid off after 6.5 years at Epic Games. And in the middle of all that chaos, it clicked in my head, "He's no longer blocked from publishing!"
Where one door closes, another always opens!
So we've been sprinting together these last few weeks - me building the trailer, helping with thumbnail design, finding bugs - while Noah does what he's been quietly building toward for five years, building the games and squashing the bugs. This is what OTX is about: taking quality shots on goal. And this one has been a long time coming.
Noah built this. I couldn't be prouder of him.
